Chapter 12
Nancy and Millie raced back to the ship, hearts pounding and breaths catching in their throats. They were among the last to board, the closing gap between the gangway and the ship a stark reminder of their near miss. As they stepped onto the deck, the weight of the helicopter pilot's words hung between them, a shared bewilderment that was almost comical, yet no laughter came. They exchanged a look that said everything: disbelief, curiosity, and an unspoken worry about what it meant for their investigation into Tyler Mason's sudden death.
Millie, feeling a whirlwind of thoughts, excused herself to head back to her quarters, leaving Nancy to ponder their next steps alone. Nancy, her mind racing with the day's revelations, decided it was time to retreat to her room for a moment of solitude. However, as she turned the corner and entered her room, she was met with the sight of Thomas, his face etched with relief and concern.
Thomas immediately approached her, his voice a mix of worry and gladness. "I was starting to fear you didn't make it back to the ship," he confessed, his eyes searching hers for any sign of distress.
Nancy managed a wry smile, her gaze drifting to the assortment of saplings and exotic flora that Thomas had brought onboard, transforming their room into a miniature jungle. "I bet you hoped it was you who had missed the ship," she teased, the corners of her mouth lifting in amusement. "Looking at our room, it hardly feels like I've left the island."
As Nancy settled into the botanical oasis Thomas had created in their room, a question lingered in her mind: should she share the helicopter pilot's absurd claim with Thomas? The timing couldn't have been more serendipitous. Thomas, seemingly in tune with her inner conflict, casually draped an arm over the back of the couch, his gaze meeting hers with an intuitive spark. "So, how was your day on the island with Millie?" he asked, effortlessly weaving his inquiry into the fabric of their quiet evening. His voice was a mixture of casual interest and subtle concern, inviting her to open up.
"It was...stupid, really," Nancy began, hesitating for a moment as she chose her words carefully. "Our search ended at a helipad, where the pilot told us something unbelievable. He said he had dropped Tyler Mason on the island this morning and was waiting to take him back to the mainland."
Thomas's expression turned thoughtful, a hint of confusion passing over his features. "That's...weird," he finally said, his voice trailing off as he processed the information. "Because, after I boarded the ship today, I could've sworn I saw Tyler...but, of course, that must've been someone else."
Nancy couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, brushing off the gravity of Thomas's words. "You're seeing doppelgangers now?" she teased lightly, a playful glint in her eyes. "Maybe the island's getting to you more than we thought." With a dismissive shake of her head, she turned her attention back to the room, subtly steering the conversation away from the impossible sightings and absurd claims.
